• How to Kill ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts)

ANT stands for automatic negative thought. It is estimated that we have about 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. About 95% of these thoughts we thought yesterday and will think again tomorrow. Most of those thoughts are automatic and reflexive. What's more, about 80% of these thoughts are negative.

negative_thoughtsMany of our ANTs are based on past programming and conditioning. Unfortunately, a lot of that past programming and conditioning limits our potential. We have to stand guard at the door of our minds and be vigilant about what thoughts we habitually let ourselves think and what outside messages and programming we allow to enter in. We have to take control of how we interpret our experiences and put the most empowering frame around those experiences. Many of our thoughts are just below our normal level of awareness - some are so habitual and familiar that we don't even question their validity or usefulness. In order to kill the ANTs, we need to be more present in our thoughts. Eventually, THIS will be the norm.

    • Awareness: Killing the ANTs starts with being more aware and observant of our habitual thoughts. You didn't ask for a raise because your boss gave a hard time to your co-worker? You are not your co-worker. You deserve a raise. Go in with only positive thoughts, and you will achieve positive results.
    • Evaluate: We must evaluate the truth and usefulness of each of those thoughts using facts and rational thought. You won't go the party because you won't meet anyone you like. Really? You know everyone at this party already, and they all suck? Put on your best polyester shoes and get going.
    • Interrupt & Correct: Any thought that is deemed negative, destructive, or disempowering needs to be interrupted and changed to a more positive, constructive, and inspiring one. This takes practice, so don't be discouraged if you find yourself constantly catching yourself. Start simple. I am strong. I will bench 250 today. Make it your mantra. If it isn't true today, it will be true eventually - as long as you keep trying.

Habitual thoughts become beliefs. Thoughts and beliefs determine our emotions. The emotions we feel determine the actions we take. The actions we take determine the results we get. Kill the ANTS so you can thrive and live the life you deserve.
