Too often we measure success with tangible things: money, pant size, car. But true achievement (even that which does bring the tangible goodies), is not measured that way. It is measured by character, will, hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. When you define it that way, all of a sudden success seems daunting; but don't fret. You have control over all of those things. When you can accept that you have control over your own success, then you will see how you can achieve any goal you have before you. Here are six ways to insure you are working towards true success - no matter what the goal.
Stay positive Staying positive is crucial to achieving any goal. When we should be our most enthusiastic cheerleader, we are often our worst critic - resulting in defeatist behavior. Be honest with yourself and pinpoint why you are putting yourself down. Stop saying, "I can't "and start saying, “I can,” or “I am.”

Examine your motivation
Striving for something to spite your enemies or prove naysayers wrong is not the right motivation. YOU are your motivation. Everything and everyone else must be secondary, otherwise your focus and drive will wane.
Learn to love learning
Life is about learning something new everyday. Remind yourself what you love to do and expand your knowledge of those things everyday. This increase in "happy" hours and the habit of learning will change your attitude overall and build a stronger foundation ready for any challenge.
Give yourself some credit
Life is a LONG journey, so make the most of every small success. Reward yourself for even the smallest challenge overcome. If you want to get in shape but have a hard time getting a workout in, make sure to reward yourself when you do. Put $1 in a fitness jar - a gift for a future you. In a few months, you may just be able to afford to buy some new clothes or that tech gadget you've been eying.
Don’t be upset with the results you didn’t get with the work that you didn’t do
Instant gratification has become part of our lifestyle. If you apply this to your goals, however, you are setting yourself up to fail. You must be patient and realistic if you're going to succeed. Focus on the work you are doing today.
Embrace Your Fears
Fear is a necessary evil. It keeps us alive when we're in danger. But fear also stops us from succeeding. Our brains are hardwired to resist change - convincing us it's "scary" to do so - and success is not possible without it. Don't let your brain sabotage your dreams. Keep your true intentions in check and your brain will eventually comply. The fear won't go away, but you'll learn to overcome it - resulting in a stronger you mentally, spiritually, and even physically.
